Battery Safety Guide

This guide applies to all lithium-ion batteries supplied with our electric scooters, electric bikes, replacement battery packs and spare battery accessories. All products comply with Australian electrical safety standards, including IEC 62133-2, EN 50604-1 and UN 38.3 transport certification, and meet state-based micromobility safety requirements under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL). Failure to follow all safety instructions may create fire, explosion or electric shock hazards, void your product warranty and limit your statutory consumer guarantees.

1. Approved Chargers & Charging Rules

  • Only use the original manufacturer charger supplied with your battery or certified replacement chargers sold via Scooter Bike Hub. Third-party, unbranded, damaged or incompatible chargers are strictly prohibited. Mismatched chargers cause overheating, thermal runaway and battery fire risk.
  • Charge indoors only on a flat, non-flammable hard surface (concrete, tile). Never charge on carpets, bedding, sofas, wood furniture or inside fabric storage bags.
  • Do not leave batteries or e-vehicles charging unattended overnight or for extended periods over 8 hours. Disconnect power once fully charged.
  • Keep batteries and chargers away from children and pets during charging.
  • Unplug the charger from the mains wall outlet if you will be away from home for more than 24 hours.
  • Stop charging immediately if the battery, charger or plug becomes excessively hot, swells, emits smoke, strange odours, sparking or leakage. Do not attempt to continue use.

2. Safe Storage Requirements

  • Store batteries and fully assembled scooters/bikes in cool, dry indoor spaces between 10°C – 25°C. Avoid garages without ventilation, direct sunlight, car boots, sheds, or areas exposed to rain, humidity, frost or extreme heat.
  • Do not store batteries near flammable materials including paper, cardboard, clothing, fuel, aerosols or garden chemicals.
  • For long-term storage (over 30 days): charge the battery to 40%–60% capacity, disconnect fully from the vehicle, and recharge once every 30 days to prevent deep discharge cell damage.
  • Never store loose spare lithium batteries loose together without protective casing; separate cells may short-circuit.
  • Install heat/smoke alarms in garages or storage areas where e-mobility batteries are kept, per state fire safety recommendations.

3. Usage & Riding Safety

  • Do not operate the scooter or bike if the battery casing is cracked, dented, swollen, punctured, leaking fluid or deformed in any way. Cease use immediately and contact support for inspection.
  • Avoid fully draining the battery to 0% during regular riding; repeated deep discharge permanently damages lithium cells and accelerates safety failure.
  • Do not submerge batteries or the entire vehicle in water. While products feature water-resistant ratings, prolonged submersion, heavy rain immersion or high-pressure washing causes internal short circuits and battery failure.
  • Do not overload the vehicle beyond the listed maximum weight limit – excess load strains the battery, increases heat and shortens service life.
  • Do not expose batteries to open flame, welding sparks, or extreme heat sources such as heaters.

4. Forbidden Modifications & Repairs

  • All battery packs are sealed factory units. No self-disassembly, DIY repair, cell replacement or wiring modification permitted. Tampering with internal battery components voids the full product warranty and creates severe fire risk.
  • Do not cut, pierce, drill or bend the battery housing.
  • Do not connect multiple batteries in parallel or series without certified professional installation.
  • All battery inspection, repair or replacement work must be completed by Scooter Bike Hub authorised service technicians only. Unauthorised third-party repair will invalidate warranty coverage.

5. Transport & Courier Rules

  • When transporting spare lithium batteries separately from the vehicle: keep them in original protective packaging to prevent impact damage and short circuits.
  • All battery shipments comply with UN 38.3 dangerous goods packaging standards for Class 9 lithium-ion cells. Do not discard original certified packaging if you need to return or ship batteries.
  • When travelling by car: secure the vehicle or loose battery to prevent rolling, crushing or impact during braking/collision. Do not leave batteries locked inside parked vehicles under hot sun.
  • Air travel restrictions: Most airlines prohibit loose spare lithium batteries in checked luggage. Carry installed batteries within your scooter/bike only if airline guidelines permit micromobility devices. Contact your carrier prior to travel.

6. Emergency Response for Damaged / Faulty Batteries

  • If a battery swells, smokes, leaks or catches fire:
    • Move all flammable items away immediately; evacuate people and pets from the area.
    • Use a Class D dry powder fire extinguisher to suppress lithium battery fires. Water amplifies thermal runaway risks and must not be used as the primary fire suppression method.
    • Place the faulty battery into a metal bucket filled with sand or vermiculite to contain thermal activity for a minimum of 24 hours.
  • Report all battery-related incidents (overheating, swelling, fire, leakage) to Scooter Bike Hub support immediately. We will provide guidance on safe disposal and warranty assessment.

7. End-of-Life Disposal & Recycling

  • Lithium-ion batteries cannot be discarded in general household waste, landfill or recycling bins for paper/plastic. Improper disposal violates Australian waste regulations and creates landfill fire hazards.
  • Take expired, damaged or defective batteries to official local battery recycling collection points (hardware stores, council waste facilities, authorised e-waste recyclers).
  • Do not store expired faulty batteries inside your home long-term; arrange certified recycling promptly once the battery reaches end of service life.

8. Australian Consumer Law & Warranty Notice

  • Our products meet mandatory state micromobility battery safety standards applicable across Australia (NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, SA, TAS, ACT, NT)
  • This battery safety guide forms part of your product warranty terms. Damage, fire or equipment failure caused by ignoring any safety instruction will not qualify for free repair, replacement or refund under standard or extended warranty.
  • You retain all statutory consumer rights under the Australian Consumer Law for manufacturing defects unrelated to customer misuse or failure to follow safety procedures.
